Vomit and Diarrhea

As a pet parent, chances are at some point you'll need to deal with vomiting and diarrhea in your pet. While it's unpleasant and concerning to have a sick pet, more often than not, it's nothing to be overly worried about. However, you should take it seriously and give your vet a call. They can help you determine if a visit is warranted. At Huntsville Animal Clinic in Huntsville, AL, we treat many cases of dog vomiting and diarrhea, and almost as many cases of cat vomiting and diarrhea.

Vomit

Common Causes

These conditions are caused by gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. This inflammation can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

    • Bacterial or viral infection
    • Parasites
    • Change in diet (such as supplements, treats, etc.)
    • Prescription medication
    • Stress
    • Ingestion of foreign objects (such as string, toys, fruit pits, corn cobs)
    • Ingestion of toxins (such as pesticides, cleaners, certain plants, antifreeze)
    • Tumors
    • Organ failure
    • Diabetes

If you know that your pet has swallowed a poisonous substance, contact your vet immediately or get them to the emergency animal clinic near you.

How The Vet Can Help

When you bring your pet to the vet for vomiting or diarrhea, they will check for bloating, swelling, tenderness, and pain around the abdomen and other affected areas. They may also take X-rays, blood work, or perform an ultrasound. Urine and fecal samples may also be taken.

You'll be asked about recent medical history, including changes in behavior, recent illness, any medications they've taken, and exposure to chemicals and other animals. This will help them make a proper diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can take place.

How Are Vomiting and Diarrhea Treated in Pets?

Depending on the diagnosis, your vet may prescribe one or more of the following treatments:

    • Antibiotics
    • Anti-diarrheal or vomiting medication
    • Protectants (such as Pepcid or Zantac)
    • Electrolytes (for hydration)
    • Change in diet
    • Prescription diet

In extreme and rare instances, surgery may be necessary to remove an object or repair damage to the intestinal tract.
